NEWS FROM LOWBURN FERRY

Winter is well passed and finally spring is settling in to some more consistent weather, but this photo reminds us of a fantastic day spent up at Cardrona skifield with family and friends a couple of months back.
Meanwhile, now we have bud burst in the vineyard the vines are susceptible to those overnight frosts which can be devastating on our crop. This photo was taken early morning last week.

Our 2012 vintage pinot noir has completed malolactic fermentation in the winery and is now settled in the oak barrels doing until early next year when it will be blended and bottled. By all accounts the wines are tasting very good so we look forward to the finished result. The 2011 Home Block pinot noir has already been receiving some good reviews - across the board the Central Otago wines from this vintage are a bit lighter in style. We'll hold it a bit longer before releasing.
Meanwhile our other wines just keep getting better with more bottle age, and they have been getting some fantastic press and accolades both here and abroad. Latest ones just come through:

Lowburn Ferry Skeleton Creek Pinot Noir 2009:

  • Cuisine Nov/Dec 2012 - 5 stars
  • Sydney Morning Herald: Best Import - 18th Sept 2012

Lowburn Ferry "The Ferryman" Reserve Pinot Noir 2010:

  • Gourmet Traveller Wine (Aus / NZ): : 97 points (out of 100!), 5 stars
  • Grand Jury Européen tasting: ranked in top pinots in the world - August 2012

Lowburn Ferry Home Block Pinot Noir 2011 (not yet released):

  • Wine Orbit - Raymond Chan - 4 stars, 85-87 points

Grand Jury Européen Ranks Lowburn Ferry Amongst Top Pinot Noirs in the World
August 2012

The inaugural reserve pinot noir from Lowburn Ferry has received an outstanding ovation from a panel of international tasters known as the Grand Jury Européen (GJE).

14 GJE tasters recently held a special session in Paris about the styles of various pinots noirs coming from various countries in the world : France, Italy, Switzerland, New Zealand, USA, Argentina, and Germany. Invited producers were asked to provide a wine representing a vintage between 2000 and 2010.

The lineup of 33 international pinot noir wines included Lowburn Ferry "The Ferryman" Reserve Pinot Noir from Central Otago, as well as three other iconic New Zealand brands from Central Otago, Martinborough and Marlborough.

The blind tasting did not include some top names from France, as the "grand crus" and "premier crus" from Burgundy were considered to be the benchmark for the fickle pinot noir variety – and the top ranking wines from the GJE June tasting would go forward to be blind tasted against those at a later date.

"I must say that on our 14 tasters, 6 tasters put your wine inside the 5 best : bravo ! Obviously, your country, like Oregon and Germany, is able to produce great pinot noir with finesse, complexity, a real fruit and avoiding all excess as noticed too many times. Pinot noir does not accept mediocrity : this is the reason it is so difficult to manage it !" Mr Mauss said .... ...Download full press release pdf here

As a small family wine producer we are thrilled with this accolade. Even being selected to show our wine to the Grand Jury was an honour. And here's another....
